Mountaineering On The Isle Of Skye

Are you searching for somewhere different for your annual vacation? Have you thought about visiting the country of Scotland? Have you ever visited a remote island? In the article below I  examine the Isle of Skye situated off Scotland’s west coast.

The stunning Isle of Skye is an incredibly popular destination for vacations. Usually associated with older folk the island is famed for it’s most incredible landscape and the most obvious aspect is the imposing sight of the Black Cuillins.

The Black Cuillins are a range of mountains which contain rocks from all three geological periods; Triassic, Cretaceous and Jurassic, making the mountains highly popular with both geologists and folk on the lookout for fossils as well as mountain climbers, hill-walkers, ramblers, hikers.

The tops of Sgurr nan Gillean and Am Basteir provide the most striking views. The Isle of Skye’s easiest munro to climb (a munro is a Scottish mountain which is more than 3 thousand feet) is Bruach na Frithe. The most difficult is Basteir Tooth. Sgurr Beag is easy climb also however you may find Sgurr Na h-Uarma a moderate climb.

The majority of people embark from Sligachan as it is roughly 3km from there to the Cuillins.

Mountain Safety

Every single year way too many hill walkers and ramblers (including a fair few experienced mountain climbers) end up in  a certain amount of difficulty. Skye weather can change surprisingly quickly, one moment the sun is shining strong and the next you can find yourself facing freezing winds.

The one thing which is vital to do, is to check the local weather forecast. This information is on display at the Isle of Skye’s Tourist Information Centres. These are located in the following locations: Bayfield Road in Portree, the car park in Broadford and 2 Lochside in Dunvegan.

The Tourist Information Centres print a helpful brochure explaining safety in the Cuillins which is worthwhile completing. It is very easy to spot because it is coloured orange. Once you have completed it leave it in the safe hands of a responsible person who will not be going with you.

Accommodation On Skye

As earlier mentioned the island is incredibly popular so finding Skye bed and breakfast is very difficult during the summer season. If you like the idea of a climbing vacation it is vitally important that you book your Skye bed & breakfast at the first opportunity.
