Scotland, in Britain, is a tremendous destination to take a short break featuring a valuable number of tourist attractions including some of the finest museums and galleries in the United Kingdom, countryside perfect for ramblers, mountain climbers, hikers, hill-walkers and the likes together with a multitude of castles, historical buildings, country homes and fortified houses. In the following article I talk about the Isle of Arran and describe why this is such a fantastic place in which to take a vacation.
The Isle of Arran is the seventh largest island in the country of Scotland and although the island is often grouped in with the islands of the Hebrides it is actually situated in the Firth of Clyde which is further south. As tourism is the island’s main industry you will not find it surprising to discover that there is a massive selection of Isle of Arran hotels. Although the vast majority of folk take vacations on the island to enjoy the breathtaking countryside the island also features a small selection of local attractions including; Arran Heritage Museum, Brodick Castle Gardens, Arran Transport Museum and Kildonan Castle.
There are several centres of population, the biggest settlement is Brodick, where you will find the ferry terminal with sailings to Ardrossan on the North Ayrshire coast. Lamlash, situated 4 miles south of Brodick, is where you can sail to Holy Island.
Lochranza is biggest settlement in the northerly half of the island and will find the site of the ferry terminal with sailings to Claonaig on the mainland. It is important to note that the ferry only runs in the summer. Lochranza is situated in a wide, and pretty, bay with the ruined Lochranza Castle being the main draw.
Blackwaterfoot is the largest village on the west coast of the island. The settlement features a tiny harbour, a pub and a garage (including a petrol (gas) station). Different places to visit are; Catacol (in the north), Whiting Bay (south of Brodick), Corrie (north of Brodick), Kilmory (south coast)and last but not least Pirnmill which features the finest beach on the Isle of Arran.
