Chinese tourists visits Boracay despite travel ban

Chinese tourists continue to visit Boracay Island in Aklan despite the travel ban being imposed by the Chinese government due to the standoff on the controversial Scarborough Shoal.

Edralin Piluton, Boracay tourism officer, said that according to records, more Chinese tourists went to Boracay last May compared to the same period last year.

“In the month of May last year we registered 3, 200 Chinese tourists but this May 2012 we registered 4,400 tourists. The difference however is that Chinese tourists come on their own. Before the travel ban, we received Chinese tourists on group tours,” said Piluton.

The declaration of the Chinese government on the travel ban to the Philippines was announced first week of April. Soon after the declaration, Chinese travel agencies started to announce the cancellation of tourism packages in this resort island.

Piluton said they initially thought they would not receive any visitor from China.

Both the local government and the business community here have been calling on the Chinese government to lift the travel ban being imposed for the Philippines.
